You throw yourself into the narrative, and you’re finally out in the water; the shore is pushing off behind you and the trees are getting smaller. The distant shore doesn’t seem so far, and you can feel the resolution coming, the feeling of getting out of your boat and walking the distant beach. You think the thing is going to happen fast, that you’ll paddle for a bit and arrive on the other side by lunch. But the truth is, it isn’t going to be over soon.

The reward you get from a story is always less than you thought it would be, and the work is harder than you imagined. The point of a story is never about the ending, remember. It’s about your character getting molded in the hard work of the middle. At some point the shore behind you stops getting smaller, and you paddle and wonder why the same strokes that used to move you now only rock the boat…

The shore you left is just as distant, and there is no going back; there is only the decision to paddle in place or stop, slide out of the hatch, and sink into the sea. Maybe there’s another story at the bottom of the sea. Maybe you don’t have to be in this story anymore.”

The book is about writing, about the process of getting words onto an empty page. Pressfield said a writer has to sit down every day and write, regardless of how he feels. He said you can sit around and wait for inspiration to come, but you’ll never finish your book that way. “The muse honors the working stiff,” Pressfield says. He also says that every creative person, and I think probably every other person, faces resistance when trying to create something good. He says resistance, a kind of feeling that comes against you when you point toward a distant horizon, is a sure sign that you are supposed to do the thing in the first place. The harder the resistance, the more important the task must be, Pressfield believes.”

It’s going to sound like a good idea, and you are going to get excited about it, and then when it comes time to do the work, you’re not going to want to do it. It’s like that with writing books, and it’s like that with life. People love to have lived a great story, but few people like the work it takes to make it happen. But joy costs pain.”

Serene, I fold my hands and wait. Nor care for wind, nor tide, nor sea; I rave no more ‘gainst time or fate, for, lo! mine own shall come to me.

I stay my haste, I make delays, for what avails the eager pace? I stand amid the eternal ways, and what is mine shall know my face.

Asleep, awake, by night or day, the friends I seek are seeking me; no wind can drive my bark astray, nor change the tide of destiny.

What matter if I stand alone? I wait with joy the coming years; My heart shall reap where it has sown, and garner up its fruit of tears.

The waters know their own, and draw the brook that springs in yonder heights; so flows the good with equal law unto the soul of pure delights.

The stars come nightly to the sky; the tidal wave comes to the sea; nor time, nor space, nor deep, nor high, can keep my own away from me.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,

“Come unto me and rest;

Lay down, O weary one, lay down

Your head upon my breast.”

I came to Jesus as I was,

Weary and worn and sad;

I found in Him a resting place,

And He has made me glad.

2.
She’s been such a trooper, spending the last 48 hours in a place she’s proudly averted for nearly 58 years. Seriously, she hasn’t touched the scene of a hospital since the day my step-dad was born. She’s simply refused.

Now, with the help of my aunt, Noona’s navigating the oncology wing and settling in to room #542. Lou (the step-dad) will be flying to New York tomorrow to help her sort through treatment options and discuss the potential of her coming to live with us.

We’ll see…I just hope she’s asleep and falling into dreams of sweet(er) days. The days of her childhood spent skipping along the foothills of Umbria, Italy*

Clutching her rosary, I hear her whisper, “God gives me health. I give Him thanks.”
